My Soul Thirsts for You!

Stay Thirsty

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh
faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. ” (Psalm 63:1, ESV).

When I recently came across this psalm of David, it raised questions in my mind: What does a soul-thirst such as this look like? What caused David to be thirsting in such a way that his flesh fainted for God?

We are very privileged people. Many of us don't really know what it is like to thirst for water. Everywhere we go there is running water. We have such easy access that we never need to have such a thirst that we are dying to get it. David did not have this luxury. He knew what it was like to thirst both physically and spiritually.

Along with having access to an abundance of water, we also have access to the very words of God. If we only replenished our body with physical water as much as we replenished our souls with the spiritual sort, what kind of shape would our body be in?

And why would David follow his declaration of spiritual thirst with the statement that his flesh also fainted for God? David was a man that had often seen God do great works in the land. From giving him strength to defeating the lion and the bear to slaying Goliath, he was a man who knew that God would take care of him and had control of his life.

He knew he needed God both for the spiritual thirst of his soul and the physical realities of his flesh.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6 ESV).

“Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11 ESV)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 ESV)

How is our thirst for God?

God has poured out his blessings into our lives, and His Word and Spirit into our
souls.

Stay thirsty, my friends!
